Chat with a Virologist - Questions and Answers on Covid-19: Virtual Workshop Series 2020

Registration is closed for this event
2:00PM - 4:00PM (Eastern Time)

This gathering will be purely informative, starting with a slide presentation and lecture from a highly qualified virologist and ending with an opportunity to ask questions.  Topics covered will include scientific background on the SARS-CoV-2 virus, types of Covid-19 tests and what each means, prevention precautions, Covid-19 infection stages (including asymptomatic infections), vaccine effectiveness, vaccine timelines, general information about pandemics, and more.

Dr. Larissa Thackray is an Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Thackray obtained her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center on coronaviruses and did postdoctoral training studying noroviruses at Washington University School of Medicine. She performs research using small animal models to understand how interactions between viruses and their host determine the outcome following virus infection, and ultimately to develop new strategies to improve human health. She has used small animal models to study a variety of viruses: noroviruses, astroviruses, flaviviruses and now, coronaviruses. As part of an effort to ‘humanize’ virology research during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Thackray started a podcast called ‘Let’s Meet the Virologists’ in which she talks with students, staff, postdocs and faculty who are working to understand viruses and how they affect you. Dr. Thackray’s podcast aims to illustrate the diversity of people doing virology with a current emphasis on the scientists studying SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.
